Thinking of a Wisconsin Elopement?

First of all—heck yes! Whether you’re craving a private lakeside vow exchange, a cozy courthouse moment, or an epic mountaintop (okay fine, mostly big hilltops in Wisconsin) adventure, Wisconsin has some truly stunning elopement locations.

Why Consider an Elopement?

Let’s be real: weddings can be A LOT. Trust me, I know all too well. Guest lists, seating charts, the classic “Well, Aunt Linda is vegan now, so we need a separate menu for her.” If you’d rather ditch the stress/theatrics and focus on what actually matters—celebrating your love—then eloping might just be the move for you.

Elopements strip everything down to the essentials: two people in love, a beautiful location, and a photographer (hi, that’s me!) to document it all in a way that feels organic and real. No pressure, just moments.

My Approach to Elopements

Whether your elopement is an intimate adventure or a courthouse “I do” with your closest family, I approach every elopement with the goal of making you feel like yourselves. Because the whole point is to get out of the constraints of a traditional wedding, and just focus on the things that matter most to you.

When we are in “taking photo time” I’ll guide you through lighthearted, natural prompts so you never feel awkward. You’ll laugh, move, soak in the moment, and walk away with photos that transport you right back to your day every time you look at them.

Now, let’s talk best Wisconsin elopement locations!

I’m gonna group these loosely into regions of Wisconsin. My goal is that if you don’t find a location here that seems perfect, I at least get you thinking and help find that perfect spot for you.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

The Best Places To Elope In The Madison Area

A romantic black and white photo of two people embracing on an elegant marble staircase beneath ornate classical architecture.

Wisconsin State Capitol

For a sophisticated urban elopement, the Wisconsin State Capitol is iconic. The marble interiors, grand staircases, and soft natural light make for effortlessly elegant photos. The capitol pairs perfectly with either a stop at the lakeshore, an evening classic wooden boat ride, a stop at a beautiful bar, or a small reception with family and friends.

Best in spring or summer when the gardens around the Capitol bloom beautifully. But also a great spot all year round.

A couple sits outdoors with their two large brown dogs wearing harnesses during an engagement photo session.

Devil’s Lake

If you want a bit more adventure, this is it. Picture sunrise vows on a rocky bluff overlooking the lake, with nothing but nature and your love to keep you company. I do highly recommend missing peak family time on Saturdays when school is out! Which means as close to sunrise and sunset as possible, which is the best for photos and taking in the views anyways.

Best in summer and fall when the foliage creates an unforgettable backdrop.

A person poses in a natural canyon formation surrounded by towering rock walls in black and white photography.

Parfrey’s Glen

Wisconsin’s oldest natural area is a hidden gem with mossy rock walls and a fairytale feel.

Best in spring when the greenery is fresh and waterfalls are flowing.

A couple stands together in a sunlit meadow during sunset with trees in the background.

Driftless Region

Rolling hills, quiet farms, and winding country roads—perfect for a peaceful, private elopement in nature.

Best in summer & fall for golden wheat fields and warm breezes.

Two elegant champagne flutes filled with sparkling wine sit on a wooden table with blurred lights in the background.

Downtown Madison

Charming streets, lakeside views, and endless fun photo ops. Perfect for a city-loving couple.

Best in spring and summer when the city comes alive with events and flowers.

A couple walks through a lush garden with purple wildflowers blooming in a meadow under tall trees.

Olbrich Botanical Gardens

A lush, tropical setting for couples who want an elegant garden elopement.

Best in spring and summer when the gardens are in full bloom or winter in the indoor conservatory.

Chazen Museum of Art

For the art-loving couple, this modern space is unique and stylish.

Best year-round, with indoor options perfect for a cozy winter elopement.

Villa Terrace

A gorgeous Italian-style villa overlooking the lake. It’s like escaping to Europe without leaving Wisconsin. This might be the best wedding venue in the state. And an intimate celebration here is an absolute must. Just being here feels special and takes me back to Europe every time.

If you can’t tell. This is a top recommendation from me.

Best in spring or summer when the gardens are lush and green.

A couple shares a romantic kiss while standing in shallow ocean water at sunset.
A romantic couple walking along a peaceful beach at sunset with waves lapping at the shoreline.

Kohler-Andrae State Park

Sandy dunes and dreamy Lake Michigan views—yes, please! Absolutely one of my favorite places in Wisconsin for any kind of photos, but especially an elopement.

Best in late spring and early summer when the temperatures are comfortable and the sunsets are golden.

Kettle Moraine State Forest

For couples who want a rustic, woodsy elopement with hiking trails and scenic overlooks.

Best in fall when the leaves are fiery reds and oranges.

Any of the Lake Michigan Parks

Seriously, the lakeshore in Milwaukee is stunning. Pick a park, and you can’t go wrong. I would skip some of the most popular ones like Bradford Beach. My favorites are Grant Park, specifically the bottom of the seven bridges trail, Atwater Park, Lake Park, and Big Bay Park.

Best in summer for that breezy, lakeside feel.

A couple embraces under the sweeping modern architecture of a white arched building with glass windows.

Milwaukee Art Museum

Modern, iconic, and right on the lake. For interior photography sessions there is a rental fee. It is more than worth it for how unique of an experience it is. The Art Institute of Chicago is another compelling museum option, or the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison.

Best in any season. But my pick would actually be winter and spring.

The Best Places To Elope By Green Bay

Two figures in formal attire dance beneath the vintage Northland NortJiland theater marquee entrance.

Hotel Northland

If you love the romance of vintage hotels, Hotel Northland in Green Bay is a dream. Think 1920's elegance, a grand staircase, and timeless art deco details. Perfect for a classy, intimate elopement.

Best in winter when you can cozy up inside or around the holidays for a festive, elegant vibe

The Paine Art Center & Gardens

A stunning European-style mansion with lush gardens, The Paine is a dreamy venue for an elegant, fairytale-like elopement. It really is a stunner of a place, and would really bring out the elegant vibes.

Best in spring and summer when the gardens are in full bloom, or of course also fall when the historic architecture is accented by vibrant autumn colors.

The Best Elopement Spots In Door County

A figure stands on the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior near cliffs and evergreen trees during golden hour.

Cave Point County Park

Dramatic rock formations and turquoise waters make this a jaw-dropping spot. It definitely gives Oregon Coast type of vibes.

Best in late summer when the water is calm and clear.

Whitefish Dunes State Park

Soft sand, gentle waves, and a feeling of total escape. Also right next to Cave Point County Park.

Best in early fall when the beaches are quieter and the colors begin to change.

Peninsula State Park

Cliffs, water, and endless trees—an absolute dream.

Best in summer and fall for the most stunning views.

Washington Island

Take the ferry to this charming, off-the-grid island for a peaceful and picturesque elopement. This is also a really good place to try and see the Northern Lights because there is no light pollution to the North.

Best in summer when the lavender fields bloom.

The Best Northern Wisconsin Elopement Locations

A couple embraces on a beach at sunset while waves crash against the shore in romantic golden light.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Dreaming of eloping on the water? The Apostle Islands offer sea caves, dramatic cliffs, and the kind of scenery that feels straight out of a dream. This is truly a destination type of experience, it really feels like you are not in Wisconsin anymore.

Best in summer or early fall when Lake Superior is at its most magical and accessible by kayak and boat.

Family Cabin

If you have a family cabin tucked away in the Northwoods, why not make it the backdrop for your elopement? There’s something incredibly special about exchanging vows in a place already filled with so many memories. A quiet dock at sunset, a cozy firepit moment—it’s relaxed, intimate, and completely personal.

If you don’t have a family cabin, rent one! There are so many incredible options and many of them are close to or in other locations on this list.

A cascading waterfall flows through a forest of evergreen and autumn trees on an overcast day.

Copper Falls State Park

If you’re chasing waterfalls, Copper Falls is the spot. Some of the most beautiful and dramatic waterfalls in the Midwest. It is *usually* not very crowded here in my experience.

Gorgeous any time of year, but especially in fall when the leaves turn fiery red and gold, or in winter when the waterfalls freeze into breathtaking ice formations.

Madeline Island & Bayfield

Take the ferry over to this little slice of paradise for a unique, island-style Wisconsin elopement. Picture beachy vibes, stunning rock formations, and golden sunsets. And it is pretty darn close to the Apostle Islands for even more adventure.

Bayfield is charming, historic, and surrounded by Lake Superior views. Whether you elope in town or take a boat to a quiet lakeshore, it’s a hidden gem for couples who love small-town charm with a side of adventure.

Best in late spring through early fall when the ferry runs frequently and the island is alive with color.

Hayward

For a woodsy, secluded vibe, Hayward’s forests and lakes offer the perfect backdrop. Eloping here means crisp pine-scented air, quiet canoe rides, and a golden-hour glow filtering through the trees.

Best in summer or early fall when the lakes are warm and the trails are perfect for exploring.

Elopement Spots In Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Listen. This may count as cheating.

However, as with Elopements, there are no rules here.

And it is probably a drive not a plane ticket anyways.

So with that Midwest logic this totally counts.

A couple shares a romantic moment on rocky cliffs overlooking Lake Superior's dramatic shoreline in Minnesota.
A silhouette stands on rocky coastal outcrop as waves crash dramatically against the shore during overcast weather.

Marquette & Presque Isle Park

Marquette blends historic charm with rugged beauty. Presque Isle Park offers dramatic cliffs, scenic overlooks, and Lake Superior waves crashing in the background. It reminds me so much of the Oregon coastline. Absolutely spectacular.

Best in late summer or early fall when the colors are vibrant and the air is crisp.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Colorful cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking vistas make this an awe-inspiring place to say "I do." The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is HUGE so picking several spots to visit or boat to is essential! One of my favorite locations is actually right next to the Pictured Rock Lakeshore Park Headquarters. Right here there are incredible views and sand bars that would be a ridiculously cool place to have a ceremony, basically in the lake. And Grand Island across the South Bay is beautiful.

Best in summer for kayaking adventures or fall for stunning foliage.

Rushing waterfall cascades over rocks surrounded by autumn foliage in a forest setting during fall season.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Lake of the Clouds, and Presque Isle River

For a true wilderness elopement, the "Porkies" offer mountain-like views, pristine forests, and waterfalls. Lake of the Clouds is especially breathtaking at sunrise or sunset. The Presque Isle River has one of the most beautiful trails that follows the river and endless waterfalls.

Best in summer and fall when the hiking trails are most accessible.

Stunning Milky Way galaxy illuminates the night sky over a tranquil shoreline with distant lights along the coast.

Houghton

A quaint college town with historic architecture and access to the Keweenaw Peninsula, perfect for couples who love quiet, charming elopements.

Best in fall for colorful leaves or winter if you love snow-covered scenery. While it is more of an adventure in many ways. Winter up here is not just beautiful, but the best time to see the Northern Lights! And this is a perfect dark-sky location.

Best year-round—because there’s never a bad time for Culver’s.

North Avenue Beach, Chicago

For couples who want a big city skyline with a beachy twist, North Avenue Beach offers a stunning view of the Chicago skyline against Lake Michigan. My favorite time here is right aftersunset when we still have that glow in the sky but the lights of the city are coming on.
