Intimate, Intentional, and Absolutely Stunning — Weddings at Ellsworth Block Madison
Okay, can we just talk about Mara and Ethan for a second? To know them is to love them. From the moment I first talked with them, I knew this was going to be that kind of wedding day. The kind where everything just feels effortless and real, and you spend the day wondering how two people can be so perfectly matched and just so fun to be around.
They chose to work with me because they wanted a blend of editorial and documentary, with some film. The kind of images that feel polished and intentional, but also completely real. No stiff posing, no forced smiles. Just them, captured honestly. That was music to my ears.
The Venue: Ellsworth Block Is Just Different
If you're not already familiar with Ellsworth Block as a Madison wedding venue, let's change that.
Ellsworth Block is a restored historical gem right in downtown Madison, right above the Old Fashioned. Sitting on Capitol Square and the energy of that location alone is something, you can hit the farmers market on your way in.
And stepping inside? The exposed brick, the large windows flooding every room with natural light, the neutral palette of creams, beiges, and cool grays — it all comes together into something that feels both effortlessly timeless and completely modern. It's the kind of space where your jaw drops a little, and then you just... kinda relax into it.
Built specifically for smaller, more intimate events, Ellsworth Block can comfortably host around 80 guests, but you can squeeze in 120. I love the sense of scale that comes with the space, and the view out the windows is phenomenal.
Here's a little tip for future brides scoping out the best intimate wedding venue in Madison: the venue is so architecturally stunning that you truly do not need to go overboard on decor. Mara and Ethan let the space do the heavy lifting — and then elevated it with minimal but stunning florals that felt like they grew right out of the walls. Chef's kiss.
A sweeping staircase, tons of natural light,and easy access to downtown Madison? It's basically every editorial photographer's dream. The variety with mixing the venue and the capitol is incredible.
One thing to note: There is no elevator. And it is on the second & third floors. Catering, DJ, myself, and you will need to bring everything up those stairs. Certainly something to know.
The First Look That Stopped Time
One of the standout moments of the entire day was Mara and Ethan's first look — and if you're on the fence about doing one at your own wedding, let me be your unofficial campaign manager for Team First Look.
There is something about that moment — the quiet before the ceremony, just the two of them — that is completely unmatched. Ethan turned around, and the look on his face when he saw Mara?
Completely unguarded. No crowd, no pressure, just pure emotion. Mara laughed, then teared up, then laughed again.
It was one of those scenes where I’m behind the camera thinking, this is why I do this.
It also gave us the gift of time. After the first look, we were free to roam — and roam we did.
Capitol Square in the Summer? Yes, Always.
After the first look, we took the party outside to the Wisconsin State Capitol building. If you've never seen the Capitol on a warm summer day in Madison, it's one of those things that just makes you proud to be in this city, and shocked this building is in Wisconsin. The light, the architecture, the energy of people moving through the square — it all becomes part of the story.
The venue's central location means the iconic Wisconsin State Capitol is essentially right outside the door, offering a grand backdrop for some editorial wedding portraits. Wide, sweeping shots with that stone in the background. Quiet, tucked-away moments in the archways. At times like these. It feels like the photos are taking themselves.
The summer light in Madison is genuinely magic. That long golden hour, the soft warm tones, the way everything just glows — it was tailor-made for the editorial, documentary vibe we were going for.
What Made This Day Theirs
Mara and Ethan have this quality about them — they're deeply present with each other. Not in a performative way, but in the way where you notice they keep finding each other in a crowd. That authenticity is exactly what drew them toward documentary-style photography in the first place, and it's exactly what made every frame feel alive.
The editorial portraits are fun. But documentary photography is what really matters for your wedding. Authenticity documenting you and your loved ones is so important.
The florals deserve a whole separate post, honestly. They were lush and intentional without being overdone — the perfect complement to Ellsworth Block's already breathtaking interior. Everything felt curated but not overdone, which is genuinely the hardest balance to strike.
