Engagement at Wisconsin State Capitol | Juan & Melissa’s Stylish Summer Shoot


When I first met Juan and Melissa, I immediately knew their engagement session was going to be something special. These two exude a natural confidence and warmth that’s absolutely contagious. Combine their personalities with the timeless beauty of the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, and we had the perfect recipe for an unforgettable session.


The Scene: Wisconsin State Capitol in Summer


It’s a Madison icon, with its grand marble staircases, towering columns, and those perfectly symmetrical lines that just scream editorial masterpiece. Add in the glow of a warm summer evening, and we had the kind of light photographers dream of. The Capitol sits right in the heart of Madison, surrounded by the Capitol Square, which is bustling with energy in the summertime—from street performers (My favorite is the marimba guy) to the farmers market. Although be sure to dodge the farmers market on Saturday morning to escape some chaos.


Editorial Vibes with a Personal Touch


Juan and Melissa wanted their engagement session to feel modern and bold—an editorial edge, but still full of authentic emotion. We leaned into those vibes with some playful direct flash shots, which gave their photos a chic, high-fashion feel. The clean lines of the Capitol building and the contrast of light and shadow created a stunning backdrop for this aesthetic. I loved how effortlessly Juan and Melissa brought their personalities to the session: Juan’s quiet confidence balanced perfectly with Melissa’s radiant, easy laughter.

Exploring The Capitol Square


After capturing some iconic shots inside the Capitol (hello rotunda!), we stepped outside to explore the square. Madison engagement photography is all about making the most of the city, and the Capitol Square delivered in spades. We strolled along the square, pausing in spots where the light felt just right—those candid moments where Juan would wrap Melissa in a quick hug or they’d burst into laughter over an inside joke were pure magic.  


Summer Magic & Emotion


What made this session unforgettable wasn’t just the location or the editorial vibes; it was the way Juan and Melissa let their connection shine. They weren’t afraid to be themselves, whether that meant twirling in the middle of the Capitol lawn or sneaking a kiss under the soft glow of the streetlights. Their love was tangible—effortless yet electric—and I couldn’t help but feel so honored to capture it.  


That is my favorite thing about the engagement sessions and why they are so important. Getting your photo taken is weird. And getting through that awkwardness and getting to the real stuff BEFORE your wedding day is so helpful and makes the wedding day feel so much more natural.
